Rain Water Harvesting & Native Gardnening Event March 18th

rainbarrelAre you interested in tips that can help you create and sustain an attractive garden or landscape while protecting the environment and potentially saving on your water bill? If so, join register to attend the presentation on March 18th for an evening of learning about ways you can lower your global footprint on your lawn, garden and overall landscape. The evening will start with a brief introduction into water resource issues in South Carolina by Rebekah Szivak of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. She will touch on the more broader ideas of water conservation in your homes. Then, we will switch gears and get more specific with Colette Degarady from the S.C. Nature Conservancy. Degarady will discuss the benefits of planting native as well as give suggestions for plants that do well in the lowcountry and landscaped environments.

David Joyner from Clemson University Extension will give the group a demonstration on constructing a rain barrel including which materials and locations work best. Rain barrels are used to collect water from rooftops after rain events; the presentation will give best practices for building your own. All presentations will supply the audience with resources for additional information. As always, educational opportunities as part of the DNR Coastal Explorations Series are free but registration is preferred online at http://www.dnr.sc.gov/marine/NERR/seminarseries.html

The event will be held at the Fort Johnson Marine Center Auditorium on James Island from 6:00 to 8:00 on the evening of March 18th. Upon registration, directions/ further event details will be emailed to you prior to the evening.
