Oak Terrace Preserve Called ‘Role Model’ in National Awards

Home Depot Foundation Award of Excellence cites Oak Terrace Preserve as “role model for successful completion of a sustainable community”; Award presented to City of North Charleston, with a $75,000 grant to the Sustainability Institute of South Carolina

North Charleston, SC (December 21, 2009) — The City of North Charleston, South Carolina’s Oak Terrace Preserve green residential neighborhood has been cited as a national model for sustainable communities by The Home Depot Foundation of Atlanta, Georgia.

The City of North Charleston won this first-ever national competition from the Foundation, following an early December news conference. At the news conference, Fred Wacker, chief operating officer for The Home Depot Foundation, said “North Charleston’s Oak Terrace Preserve is a national model for sustainability, which neighborhoods and communities throughout the national should follow”.

The process in awarding North Charleston the Home Depot Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development involved a detailed examination of the OTP project and City green initiatives by experts from throughout the United States, and taping with an Atlanta-based film and photography crew that spent two days in North Charleston (see video link below)…..
