The PTA of the Montessori Community School of Charleston (a public school) is interested in moving it’s location from West Ashley to the grounds of the existing School of the Arts in the center of Oak Terrace Preserve. Montessori Research
A study published in the September 2006 issue of the journal Science compared children at a public inner-city Montessori with children who attended traditional schools. The following are facts about Montessori students from that study:
- Performed better on standardized tests of reading and math
- Engaged more in positive interaction on the playground
- Had more advanced social cognition and executive control
- Had more concern for fairness and justice
- Wrote more creative essays with more complex sentence structure
- Selected more positive responses to social dilemmas
- Had a sense of community at their school

- Has an absolute rating of Excellent
- Has tripled in size
- Has 144 students with 119 on the waiting list
- Is a county-wide magnet
- Uses all state and Montessori certified teachers with two teachers Nationally Board Certified and one National Board Candidate
- Attracts families that have previously chosen to leave the public school system
- Rarely has discipline issues because of a supportive learning environment
- Was the first public Montessori school in South Carolina
