Habitat for Humanity is Looking for Volunteers to Build EarthCraft Homes
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25
Build Green
8:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day
Priceless, with a free lunch!
Habitat for Humanity, known for providing affordable housing, is now becoming a leader in green building as well. Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, headquarted on Johns Island, will be showcasing their transition to green building in a new development located on Wadmalaw Island. All new homes will be constructed using techniques outlined by EarthCraft (just like the ones in Oak Terrace Preserve), which covers site planning, energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and indoor air quality.
The property, donated by a local family on the island, requested that the new village “McCloud Place” be built with as little impact to the land as possible. Rather than clear-cut and cultivated lawns, a “plant save” on the property will be implemented along with the use of native plants and garden space.
Homes will be built with a SEER HVAC unit, use low/no-VOC products, local materials, FSC certified lumber, recycled and renewable resources.
Sign-up as a volunteer and join our energy conservation partners in this groundbreaking effort to bring sustainable, energy-efficient housing to the lowcountry. They‘ll take the house from a concrete floor to the roof in one week! Learn while you build with a presentation by the sponsoring organization each day over lunch. To volunteer call Habitat Volunteer Coordinator, Anne Randall at 843-769-0998, ext. 109.
