The Olde North Charleston Picture House, located at 4820 Jenkins Avenue (near the corner at East Montague in the Olde Village, will be showing the following films during April.

April 3. Four Rooms. Four stories set in a Los Angeles hotel on New Year’s Eve. Tim Roth stars as the principal character of the frame tale and takes part in the four stories, which feature Quentin Tarantino, Antonio Banderas and Madonna. Directors are: Allison Anders (“Missing Ingredient”), Alexandre Rockwell (“The Wrong Man”), Robert Rodriguez (“The Misbehaver”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Man from Hollywood”). 1995. Comedy. 98 mins. Rated R

April 17. Howl’s Moving Castle. Based on a Diana Jones’ fantasy novel, 18-year-old Sophie works in her late father’s hat shop in a humdrum town. But things get interesting when she’s transformed into an elderly woman by the evil Witch of the Waste (voiced by Lauren Bacall). Determined to reverse the spell, Sophie seeks the help of the wizard Howl, who has an amazing moving castle that’s fueled by a fire demon named Calcifer. 2004. Animation. 119 mins. Family Film Series. Rated PG

April 24. Web of Water/Tapped. Rivers touch some aspect of our lives every day, quietly serving a need for drinking water, farming, power, industry and recreation. In the spring of 2008, educator Ian Sanchez kayaked from the mountains to the sea, connecting our cultural & natural landscapes. This film is based on the environmental education outreach of the South Carolina Lowcountry Environmental Education Program, which co-sponsors this event. Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right or a commodity that should be bought and sold? “Tapped,” an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water, won the Indie Award for Excellence in filmmaking and was chosen by the International Documentary Association to be a 2010 Academy award contender for Best Documentary. A panel discussion follows the films. Documentaries. 103 mins. Not Rated

Prior to these two films, we are hosting a special beer dinner at Cork Bistro (1067 E. Montague), featuring a 3-course menu. Seats are limited, contact us for details!

Films are shown on Saturday at 7 pm. $2 members; $5 non-members. Free Popcorn! ). This is a project of the non-profit Greater Park Circle Film Society, which presents independent films, documentaries, film classics, and shorts, educates about the art of film, supports local filmmakers, and fosters civic engagement.

Complete film details are available at http://parkcirclefilms.org or phone 843.628.5534.

Century Oaks was originally a U.S. Government owned temporary housing complex for Naval Shipyard workers and their families. On this map you can see the single-family and duplex homes, the former road system and the commercial area near Lackawanna Blvd. Rumor has it the commercial area was one of the first shopping centers in North Charleston.

We asked for some submissions of projects and activities from Oak Terrace Preserve residents and Joan heard us. Joan and her husband’s landscaping efforts are clear to anyone walking by their home. These are some of her suggestions for anyone looking to expand their garden.

I am experimenting with a technique for creating or enlarging a garden bed into an area covered with grass. With this method there is no digging up of the grass and no chemicals. I did not invent this method, I read about it in several places over the past six months.

Steps:

Mark out the bed area.

Dig a trough through the grass with a spade. A flat edge spade works best if installing a border guard at the same time. My long term plans include no grass so I’m forgoing the border guard and using my favorite shovel.

Lay down four layers of news print over the area that will be the bed. Tuck the end of the newsprint into the trough you dug. Wet the paper down as you go. It helps to do a little at a time particularly if it is windy.

Lay 4 inches of pine straw or mulch on top of the paper. Wet it down again.

If all goes according to plan by fall I will be able to plant right into the beds through the paper and mulch which will hopefully be broken down. The grass will be adding nutrients to the soil but should otherwise be eradicated.

I will let you know how it goes.
